Directions: Click on one of the below links.  There you will see a number of articles.  Choose an article that interests you, and answer each of the following questions.

ScienceNewsForKids.com: CHEMISTRY | PHYSICS

Questions:

1) Why did you pick this article?

2) After reading this article, what did you find most interesting about it?

3) Do you think the information in this article is important?  Why or why not?

4) Would you recommend this article to others?  Why or why not?

5) List 3 facts from the article that you think not a lot of people would know.

GOAL: This assignment is designed to give you an introduction to physical science.  By the end of this assignment you should be able to…

  • Define Physical Science
  • Discuss some examples of things that the field of physical science might study

DIRECTIONS: Re-word each of the following sentences either by changing the order of the words or replacing words with words that have the same meaning.  Remember, it’s important that your new sentence has the same meaning as the first.

EXAMPLE 1(changing the order):
Original Sentence – Physical science combines the studies of both physics and chemistry.
New Sentence        - Physical science combines the studies of both chemistry and physics.

EXAMPLE 2 (changing the order):
Original Sentence – Physical science is the study of what things are made of and how they change.
New Sentence        - Physical science is the study of how things change and what they are made of.

EXAMPLE 3 (replacing words):
Original Sentence – Matter is made of particles too small to see.
New Sentence        - Matter is made of very small particles that are so small we can’t see them.

Goal: The goal of this assignment is to share a little about your interests and your background knowledge of science.

Directions: Think of an object that interests you.  It could be a game, a soccer ball, a book, etc.  Answer the following questions about your object.

1) Name of object

2) Description/background (i.e. what it does, how long you’ve had it, where you got it, etc)

3) 10 Observations (i.e. things you see, feel, hear, taste or smell)

4) Why do you think it was made?

5) What resources (oil, coal, wood, metals, etc) do you think were used to make it?

6) How does this object effect people’s lives?

7) What science is involved with making or using this object?
